cover&coated - an Artistic Dance Piece by NEAR&FAR

NEAR&FAR Projects looks into the physical representation of the marks an individual leaves on the world in a dance piece entitled covered&coated.

About covered&coated:

covered&coated is a physical representation of the marks an individual leaves on the world; both the positive and negative impacts one person can create. The work attempts to demonstrate the way humans brush over imperfections, allowing only the pragmatic to be seen and sharing only the more favourable qualities and characteristics.

This piece was developed in collaboration with dancers, Tavia Christina and Valerie Herdes. Together we created a physical phrase by using verbal cues that relate to the overarching theme. marked, etched, conditioned and sugar coated are a few examples of the vocabulary employed to create the movement in this piece. The verbal score became the foundation of the work and the driving force between the translation of the concept into movement.

The piece is structured in a cyclical pattern to hone the core ideas of the work as well as represent the pattern adopted by society; a constant cycle of expressing vulnerability and covering the imperfections.

About the Artists:

NEAR&FAR Projects (NFP) was founded in Fall of 2016 by artistic directors Tavia Christina and Rachel Facchini. The two had one goal in mind, to develop a creative outlet that would represent who the two are as artists, performers and individuals. The synergetic partnership is joined by the shared passion of unconventional performance and the intersection of philosophical ideas and movement. Tavia and Rachel are inspired by the human body and its natural state of being, allowing them to put forth dance that is true to human nature and its purity; through the lens of dense and complex philosophical ideas.

Some of NFP's highlights include, Long Winter Toronto, Irritation Cycle (December 2016) covered&coated (March 2018), Night Swim, an art party curated by Alvin Collates and Mary-Dora Bloch-Hansan, again, again, again (December 2016), tucked&tied; a short film featured in Alias Dance Projects Film Festival (November 2016), web series including short films, BLOOM 4 U, This is my Excuse and, adorn. In January 2017, NFP produced an informal showing, A Timely Paradox, including two new works with dancers and actors; Kunzite and Two Truths and a Lie. NFP has partnered with Short Dances to create an evening performance bringing together artists of different disciplines (March 2017). Some of our more recent collaborations include: Reaching Restrictions (collaboration between Tavia and Torgan Dance Co.) premiered in December 2017, in London UK, Stolen (movement film in collaboration with Venus Nazar, September 2017). Most recently, NFP produced an art party, IN A LOOP, to celebrate the co-artistic directors’ birthdays.
