Welcome - a Dance Piece by Tara Kisil

Tara Kisil explores the freedom of dance through a creative piece called Welcome.

About the Art:

This piece became an exploration of desires versus expectations. What do we want for ourselves, what is expected of us, and is there an in-between? Tara Kisil does not believe that she will find or have found a definitive answer to these questions, however, in creating this work she was able to learn to be satisfied with the uncertainty that follows them.

In the piece, the dancers find themselves in a new world. They explore this new world with an exciting curiosity that soon leads them to discover that there may be something controlling them in this new place. At first, they are resistant to the new-found force but soon realize their capacity to not only work with it, but also overcome the controlling power. Towards the end of the piece, this struggle becomes a more cohesive function between the dancers and the new world’s force.

The process for Welcome was collaborative with the dancers. Together, they created a movement language and a visual headspace we could place ourselves in that would eventually be the make up of this new world on stage. Through movement and visual art exercises, they were able to discover a world for the dancers to continually explore and investigate further.
