Mapping Sound Through Painting-the Unique Collaboration of Mediums in 'Field Recordings' by

An artistic mapping of sound. Artist, Sam Hargrove, brings us into the a new mixed media through a colourful series working in relation to painting with sound.

About The Artwork: Sound maps space. Sam Hargrove uses sound to map oceans or bodies as much as we can use it to define perceptual field. Be it the openness presented by the faint muffling of fog on an evening walk or the claustrophobic contraction of hearing nails on a chalkboard, ambient sound situates us within, and provides character to, different spaces. Likewise, the increased emotional permeability of harmony or anxious rigidity of dissonance, musical sound binds our

relationships to the environments that we find ourselves situated in.What do these relationships look like? What colour are they? These are the questions of Sam's work. Sam attempts to visually represent the character of aural-spatial relationships in snapshots, collages, and time-lapse. To best accomplish this, he has drawn to the definition of colour that acrylic paint retains through fluid movement over the texture of wood canvas

Artist Biography:

An abstract artist born and raised in Toronto, Sam Hargrove began painting in 2012 on stolen wood from construction sites and sheets bought from Value Village. You might find him at a local show, comic shop, or the cheapest bar on the block. He doesn't have a pet, but if he did, it would be named Princess Scraggle-Puss. He does his best work in his living room, listening to Thelonious Monk after too many coffees.
